A Festival in the Sky

Ryan Vasquez, 10, of Frederick, Md., tries to get a last fly in before the end of the day.

To launch a kite, there are three steps, according to the American Kite Association.

First, unroll your lines directly upwind and make sure both lines are of equal length.

Next, attach lines to clips on the kite.

Finally, with the kite lying on its back and with your back to the wind, take up the slack on both lines and pull the kite gently into an almost upright position. While taking a couple of quick steps back, pull evenly on both lines, and the kite will fly to its maximum height.

Using gentle movements, steer the kite around by pulling left and right.
