- The Chesapeake Bay Program is a regional
partnership that has been directing restoration of the bay since the Chesapeake
Bay Agreement was signed in 1983. Partners in the program include the Environmental
Protection Agency, the Chesapeake Bay Commission, the District of Columbia and the
states of Maryland, Virginia and Pennsylvania.
- The U.S.
Geological Service provides a broad overview of Chesapeake
Bay issues, as
well as information and data from recent studies on the bay and its watershed.
- The Maryland Department of Natural Resources also
has up-to-date data on the condition of the Chesapeake Bay and information on bay-centered programs and legislation in Maryland.
- Maryland Sea Grant is part of a network of 30 university-based Sea Grant
programs around the country. It conducts research on the Chesapeake Bay, with support and funding from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the state of Maryland.
- The Chesapeake Bay Trust is a private, nonprofit organization that was created by
the Maryland General Assembly in 1985. The trust provides financial grants to nonprofit organizations, civic and community groups,
schools and public agencies to support education, restoration and protection programs
for the Chesapeake Bay and its Maryland tributaries.
- The Chesapeake Bay
Foundation is a nonprofit conservation organization that has been dedicated to saving the Chesapeake Bay watershed since 1967. The
foundation operates environmental education programs
throughout the region and provides annual State of the Bay reports.
- The Alliance
for the Chesapeake Bay is another regional nonprofit
organization. The alliance bills itself as “the only organization in the region focused on improving the
bay watershed
through collaboration and consensus-building” and offers programs that promote sustainable
living practices for those living and working in the Chesapeake Bay
watershed.
- The Chesapeake Bay
Maritime Museum in St. Michaels, Md., dedicates itself to "furthering an interest, understanding, and appreciation of the
culture and maritime heritage of the Chesapeake Bay." The museum has exhibits on the history of the
bay and offers a variety of educational programs.
