Telephone repairmen,
electricians, firefighters, policemen, volunteers and construction and cleanup crews began
work immediately to restore order.
By May 3,
all power was restored to Charles County by the Southern Maryland Electric Cooperative.
By May 8, 1,350 tons of
rubble had been taken to a dump site off Route 301.
Trees and
yard waste were dumped in a separate site.
More than 80 percent of calls and walk-ins
to the
People's Place -- a makeshift center offering help to confused
residents -- were for the removal of trees
and debris, said the Rev. Christopher Otten of the Grace Lutheran
Church and School in La Plata.
