Early 2001: 2000 Census data was released.
June 1, 2001: The governor formed a redistricting advisory committee.
June to September 2001: The committee held 12 public meetings in which the public voiced
opinions on how to redraw the districts for state legislators.
Dec. 21, 2001: A public hearing was held to discuss the committee's first draft of the 47 legislative districts.
Jan. 9, 2002: The governor submitted his final legislative plan on the first day of the legislative session.
Feb. 23, 2002: As dictated in the Maryland constitution, the governor's state legislative plan became law after the 45th day of Maryland's legislative session.
* Congressional maps have no constitutional
deadline. In
fact, congressional districting is not even mentioned in the Maryland
constitution. The final congressional plan was signed into law by Gov. Parris
