May 17, 2004, marks the 50th anniversary of the Supreme Court's decision in Brown vs. Board of Education. The 1954 ruling declared that segregating students "solely on the basis of race" denied black students equal educational opportunities.

This report takes a look back at life for black students half a century ago and compares it to their plight today. What gains have been made?
