When Hurricane Katrina hit the Gulf Coast Aug. 29,
it caused
unprecedented flooding in parts of Louisiana, Alabama and Mississippi.
Many in the Washington area have volunteered their time or opened their
schools or makeshift shelters to help those left injured or homeless.
